A proactive way to prevent identity theft is to freeze your credit file with the three credit reporting bureaus, Equifax, TransUnion and Experian. Freezing your credit file means no one can open a new account. It does not close your exisitng lines of credit, but it means that no one can open a new credit account or line of credit. If you’re young and trying to open lines of credit to establish your credit history you probably don’t want to freeze your credit file. However, seniors who don’t need to open more lines of credit and maybe have paid off their mortgage can consider freezing their credit to prevent possible identity theft. Also, consider freezing your credit if you think your personal information was compromised and you’re at risk for identity theft.

Do you need a credit monitoring service? You can pull your credit report once a year for free from each of the three credit reporting bureaus from AnnualCreditReport.com, but you might want to monitor your credit more frequently. If you feel that you are at risk for identity theft, your personal information has been compromised, or you just want to keep an eye on your credit score, you might want to use a credit monitoring service. With a credit monitoring service you should be able to see your credit report and credit score, be notified when any changes occur, and depending on the service, freeze and unfreeze your credit file.

Wondering how to get your free personal credit report? There are a lot of websites out there that are charging you and putting you on continuity programs just to access to your credit report. You dont have to pay anyone to get your credit report! You can get it online at www.annualcreditreport.com. You can only get it from each credit bureau once every 12 months so you could spread out the times you get your credit report from each of the big 3 companies (possibly once every 4 months?)

Disputing Negative Records With Credit Reporting Agencies Part1
The procedure of disputing errors with Consumer reporting agencies is simple and is described on the FTCs web site. It is also described in the guides you can get on our web site http://www.101creditrepair.com
Here are the basic steps:
Get and review your credit report. You can use annualcreditreport.com to get a free report from each of big free credit reporting agencies once a year. I suggest to subscribe to a service from Experian.com, or Equifax.com – for a small fee you will get unlimited number or reports. It will help you to monitor your progress.
Identify records to correct / remove (I have another video about analyzing credit report, or read about it in my guide at http://www.101creditrepair.com ).
Write letter to the CRAs (Credit Reporting Agencies) asking them to make required corrections. Make copies for your file. Send via certified mail (keep the receipt).
The CRA must investigate your dispute and reply in 30 (or 45) days.
If they corrected – great.
If CRAs have verified the record as valid, then the next step will be to contact the institution which has placed the record (original lender or collection agency) as described in the next video. See also at http://www.101creditrepair.com
Note: I recommend certified mail because other methods (phone, internet, etc.) don’t provide easy and uniform way to keep track of all correspondence. But if you still prefer these other methods, you must keep the log of all the events: when did you call, who did you talk to, what did you discuss, or what have you entered in the web form, etc.
