Will disputing items on credit report effect the date it is originally scheduled to be removed?

June 15, 2010 - 11:06 pm 1 Comment

I have a few items on my credit report that show "scheduled to continue on record until June 2009. If I dispute these items now could those accounts be extended and remain on credit report past date originally said?

No.

This is per the Fair Credit Reporting Act and nothing but nothing resets that time line.

by filing disputes on your credit report, how does it effect your credit score? or does it at all?

First of all there is some really bad advice in some circles telling people to file blanket disputes against derogatory reporting on their credit report regardless of whether they are erroneous or not. The reason they say this is because they know that sometimes disputes carry over the 30 days required by law and through a loophole are automatically dismissed. HOWEVER in many legal circles this is considered credit fraud and I have a tendency to agree.

Now then having said that and assuming you really have errors in your reporting if those errors are removed it definitely helps increase your credit score. Below are some fantastic links about credit reporting and credit scores. Even though the page is partly about avoiding foreclosure the resources can also help you follow the law and exercise ethics when dealing with your own credit report.

AT ALL COSTS avoid scammers (crooks) who want to charge you hundreds of dollars and guarantee your credit score to increase by using a "legal" method of adding you to some other person’s credit as an "authorized user". It becomes a crime when you use your new credit rating based on that factor to obtain new credit. At that time it becomes credit fraud and conspiracy to commit credit fraud.

How do I remove a public record – jedgment – from credit report?

June 15, 2010 - 11:06 pm 4 Comments

I found a public record which I have no idea on my credit report. I disputed it with credit agency directly. Is it an appropriate approach or should I investigate to understand details and contact the plaintiff?

This happened to me as well. It wasn’t easy. I had to get my attorney to file a motion to vacate the judgement on the basis that I was never served. I didn’t deny the debt was mine and agreed to pay it anyway and was finally able to get it removed by sending all the paper work to the credit bureaus.

Credit report dispute question?

June 15, 2010 - 10:56 pm 3 Comments

I disputed an item (old cell phone bill) with ONE of the credit reporting agencies and it got deleted. I pulled my report from the other two bureaus and it mysteriously vanished from them also. I’m kind of confused on why, I mean don’t get me wrong I’m happy, but not clear on why this happened since I only disputed it with one agency. Any insight? Thanks in advance!

Chances are the cell phone company pulled it from all reporting agencies. Some one answered saying they work together, with all due respect, that’s just not correct. The credit bureaus are independent of each other, they are separate companies and competitors. The way they receive information is not from sharing it, it is from creditors reporting it to them. That’s why you may see some accounts in some reports, but not always all of them. Some creditors do report to all the major bureaus, but that’s the only way all of them get your info. If they all shared all the same information together, why do you need more then 1 credit bureau? All the info would be the same with all the credit reporting agencies.

Do you know for sure the negative account was being reported from all the reporting agencies? If it was, the creditor removed the account from all reporting agencies. They don’t always do this, and sometimes make you dispute it from each of the bureaus. Some will just go ahead and delete them all right away.

By law, creditors, lenders, and/or collection agencies have the absolute right to report information, not report it, delete it, update it, and so on. The credit bureaus will not delete an account unless the source reporting it tells them to, or they do not respond back to a disputed account in a "reasonable" time. When you dispute info with the credit bureaus, all they do is request for verification. If the source reporting it cannot verify the account, it will be deleted

Hope this helps & best of luck!

Disputing credit report online less effective?

A friend says that disputing errors on your credit report online is LESS effective than mailing a letter to the bureaus. Is this true?

Have you ever disputed credit report? How well did it go for you?

June 15, 2010 - 10:56 pm 3 Comments

I just disputed some incorrect information on mine online. I’m wondering how long this will take to be resolved. I want to buy a house and I’m waiting for this to be cleared up. Has anyone here disputed? If so, how long did it take and did it work out for you?

Depends how you got your credit report. If it was through annualcreditreport.com and you disputed information found in this free report it can take up to 45 days. If the don’t verify the information one way or the other by then, then it has to be removed. If you paid to get your credit report they have 30days to do the same thing. As for the bureau removing through their investigation, it largely depends on if it is truly incorrect or not and your ability to submit proof that it isn’t. Fax any proof you have to the bureau’s Good Luck!

How do I go about getting old stuff removed from credit report?

June 15, 2010 - 10:56 pm 1 Comment

Where do I start and how do I go about getting old stuff ( over 7 years ) removed from my credit report? I disputed it with the Trans UNion, Equifax and Experian but they claimed they verfied them and said they were due to come off back in Decemember of 07 but they are still there… How do I get them off?

Depends on what it is. Some items will stay on the report for as long as 10 years, some (such as tax liens and personal judgements) may stay on forever.

How does the negative stuff on my credit report go away?

June 15, 2010 - 10:14 pm 11 Comments

I have pulled a credit report and disputed everthing, and its all still on there. Most of the things are to expensive to pay off (would take YEARS). However, some things I could pay off quicker. How does the bad stuff go away without paying on it?
Can it go away this way?
I should also mention that the biggest thing is an eviction. the total amount is aobut $10k. This means that I cant get another apartment because I owe that money, and it would take so long to pay it off. I dont know what to do about that.

Sometimes disputing everything isnt the answer. The ones that you have paid off I would not only dispute but send copies of the paid receipts that companies have sent you and send them to the three main depositories. The three main depositories is transunion, equifax, and experian. They will verify them and show a zero balance on your report. If you owe balances on the other debts it wont do any good to just dispute them. They wont go away. If they are just medical collections they will go away in about 7 years. If they are judgments, they wont. If they are tax leins they will remain on your report for 10 years unless they contact you again then they will stay on your report longer. As far as the medical collections, video stores, small retail stores, or things of that sort the older they are the less impact they have on your credit report and your credit score. If you are interested in paying any of them I would start with the smaller balances first and go up to higher balances. The more zero balances you show it makes you look a little better. I do not recommend bankruptcy however sometimes it cant be helped. If that is the solution you choose remember it will take approximately 2 years to get a home loan with a good interest rate. You can also go to CCC otherwise known as Consumer Credit Councelors who will call those companies and come to a solution for you then you pay them X amount of dollars a month and they distribute it. Be sure and get a company that charges nothing or very little. That will sting your credit as well, but not as much as having a lot of bad debt on your credit report. And what has already been told to you, cut out the credit you dont need. In other words, stop buying and start paying cash until you can clean up your credit. Dont over extend yourself. Work off a budget and stick to it. If you pay your credit cards on time, meaning at least paying the minimum payment you can maintain a decent credit score, but that also means dont continue to use them. Cut back. Pay larger payments. You will find that your credit scores get higher if you keep your balance at 50% of the allotted high credit they have given you. ie…If your high credit is $1000. you should keep your balance at $500. Good luck with your dilemma.

CREDIT QUESTION. How can one credit report delete a negative account and another leave the same account on?

June 15, 2010 - 10:14 pm 2 Comments

After reviewing my credit report, I disputed 2 accounts with transunion, experian, and equifax. The accounts were deleted off of 2 of the 3 reports. How can the accounts be deleted from two and not the third?

The answer is this. Experian, Transunion, and Equifax are seperate companies. They operate differently from each other. I’m willing to bet that Equifax was the one that you were having trouble with. From personal experience, Equifax and sometimes Experian are bad about resolving disputed. Sometimes, it can take a 2nd or even a 3rd dispute in order to get the item removed.
